How Counselling helps...
Counselling offers you a safe and confidential space to talk about any aspect of your life that might be bothering you. It allows you to talk with someone who is trained to listen and help you explore your situation, with the aim of helping you to change things for the better. It offers you the chance to talk about your concerns in a way that you often can’t do with family and friends, giving you the freedom to say how you really feel without having to protect another person's feelings. This makes it possible for you to get to the root of what is troubling you, allowing you to overcome any obstacles that stand between you and achieving your own personal goals. Counselling is not a process where you will be told what to do or have decisions made for you, rather it is an opportunity for you to come to a greater understanding of yourself with the help of a counsellor to guide you.
What happens in the first session
Your first session will be about why you are looking for therapy and what you want to gain as well as being a chance for you to ask any questions you may have. It will also involve me asking you a number of questions to check that I can offer the most appropriate support. If, after our discussion you decide that you would like to continue, we will agree on how we will work together and make what is known as a 'therapeutic agreement'. This is a document that outlines things such as how often we will meet, confidentiality, cancellations and fees etc. and I will give you a copy to take home.
What you can expect from me
I will provide you with a safe and confidential space where you can talk about anything that bothers you. I will listen attentively to what you have to say, the way that you feel and how this affects you. I aim to foster an environment in which you will feel accepted for who you are without judgement and my motivation is to help you make the changes that you would like to see in your life. I understand that it is not always easy to talk about problems, so I will offer reassurance when needed. My goal is to work with you towards improving your well being and to this end I may have information and other resources that I wish to share with you in addition to the counselling that I offer.
What I need from you
It is only in the sharing of how you are really feeling that I will be able to help you find a way forward, so do please come OPEN and READY TO TALK about yourself and what's concerning you. I am also always open to any honest feedback on how you think that you and I are working together and whether you need anything more from me. I want you to feel safe and able to take risks with the issues that you are prepared to look at. During your counselling sessions, I will encourage you to express your feelings and emotions. It can be a great relief to share your worries and fears with someone who acknowledges what you're going through and is able to help you reach a positive solution.
